Getting Pregnant

Difficulties in conceiving can be attributed to medical problems and complications but also  to stress –related issues and lifestyle. On one occasion I spoke to a lady who was experiencing difficulty in conceiving after being married for several years. After praying the Lord prompted me to as her whether she eats chilli peppers. It turned out that not only did she eat some of the hottest variety but also in it’s raw form. I advised her that she needed to give it up if she wanted to get pregnant; her reply was but I love it and it would be too hard to stop. I simply told her that she had to choose between her love for pepper and a baby. She chose to give up the pepper and within a couple of months she was pregnant with her first child.

This would be wonderful if things were that simple with all couples but we understand that it’s not.  As Christians we also have the word of God to stand on as “children are an inheritance from the Lord” (Psalm 127:3) and the Word of God says the fruit of the womb is blessed.  It’s important for you to know that with God nothing is impossible so your situation is not an impossible one with God.  Read the story of Abraham and Sarah how God was able to bless them with a child in their old age.  There are countless other stories that you can read to encourage your faith such as Hannah in 1 Samuel chapter one, Elizabeth in Luke chapter one.  Both these women faced impossible situations but God was able to bless their womb and He can do the same for you too.

Understanding your reproductive system is a crucial part of getting pregnant. You have to know and understand your body.  Your odds of getting pregnant each month are closely linked to your menstrual cycle and specifically, to ovulation. Timing intercourse around the time you ovulate is therefore an excellent way to improve your chances of getting pregnant sooner and reduce the amount of time it takes for you to get pregnant. By understanding your reproductive system, you can determine when you’re most fertile and improve your chances of getting pregnant. There are so many myths about when is the right time of the month to try.  If you have a regular cycle then you are able to calculate more accurately your most fertile time. Apparently the most fertile time for a woman is the two weeks prior to her period when the egg is released.

THE BEST TIME TO GET PREGNANT

  • You are most likely to get pregnant if you have sex during the seven days before you ovulate. This is usually about 12 days after the first day of your last period.
  • An egg lives for about 12–24 hours after it's released. For pregnancy to happen, the egg must be fertilised by a sperm within this time. Sperm can live for up to seven days inside a woman's body. So if you've had sex in the seven days before ovulation, the sperm will have had time to travel up the fallopian tubes to 'wait' for the egg to be released.
  • It's difficult to know exactly when ovulation happens, unless you're practising fertility awareness (see External links). But in most women, ovulation usually happens 10-16 days before the start of the next period. The menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of a woman’s period (day one). Sometime after her period she will ovulate, and then 10-16 days after this, she'll have her next period. The average cycle takes 28 days, but shorter or longer cycles are normal.
